Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
