Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
