The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
