A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
